Pedal assist would be welcome, as
would a bit of suspension in the seatpost.
With as little pedaling as you do on this
bike, you end up sitting with your weight
on the seat for much of the time. You
can stand and pedal, but you really don’t
end up standing much. This is a utility
bike, and it handles a load well, but we
preferred the handling with heavier items
in the front basket and kept the lighter
things in the rear carrier. The fact that the
U500 carries the load lower than most
bikes (utility or otherwise) really helps
with the handling. It is good that the ODK
U500 works so well at getting around.
Transporting it is easy in a truck or van,
but we didn’t have as much luck with
bicycle carriers. We tried a rail-type Thule
T2 carrier, and the bike’s wheelbase was
just a touch too long to work. Lacking a
standard top tube, a second Thule rack
with retractable arms also wouldn’t work.
Eventually, we used a single-rail motorcycle rack from Harbor Freight, and that
If it sounds like we are embracing
the one-bike-for-all concept that Juiced
Riders espouses, it’s only because the
Juiced bike served a wide variety of riders so well. Focusing all the attention
on one bike has resulted in a bike that
is truly exceptional in performance and
execution. As a straight commuter, you
could find similar performance for $800 to
$1000 less, but you wouldn’t come close
to the utility, carrying capacity or, most
important, the range. This price for this
bike is an excellent value. ■
A sturdy steel fork is designed to handle
the torque of the 500-watt geared motor.
A quick-disconnect for the electrical
makes wheel removal easy.
From the single speed drivetrain to the fully gussetted frame,
the Juiced Rider maintains a simple and sturdy build.
All of the wiring connections used a threaded collar like this main power cable.
The white soft button is the main on/off power switch.
Juiced Riders calls the U500 a
utility bike rather than a cargo bike.
It is definitely ready to play or work.
