SEA OTTER E-MTB
By Neil Shirley
The Sea Otter Classic is never short on cycling events, which range from road racing on the famous Laguna Seca track to enduro mountain biking all the way to
cyclocross. Last year an additional event was added, and
that was the e-MTB race, the ;rst of its kind in the US. Of
course, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to say I competed
in the very ;rst of;cial e-bike race on American soil, even
though my experience level on a pedal-assisted bike was
zilch. I ended up having more fun in that 45 minutes than
I had on a bike in a very long time—it was a total blast! In
just the one year that has passed, it’s hard to believe the
incredible rate of growth the e-bike industry has seen in the
U.S. Now, nearly every bicycle manufacturer has an e-bike
in their line, and even traditional wheel brand Mavic is making a new Deemax wheelset designed for the increased
torque of an e-bike.
This was the hotly contested Open 40–49 Men’s race, which
included former World Cup pro and last year’s e-bike race
winner Christophe Sauser, along with Eric Jepson and
Robert Marion (far left, out in front).
To everyone’s amusement,
Yuri Hauswald returned
once again race dressed up
as a Yeti.
