13 or 14 mph, you no longer believe
the speedometer and just want to find
a socket to plug it into. On the plus
side, you can expect a good 20 miles of
sporty performance before the battery
levels drop too far.
Our test track has a great number
of streets equipped with painted bike
lanes. Having a bicycle with full scooter-style lighting and rear-view mirrors
makes the Jetson feel remarkably safe
when you have bike lanes. That is triple
true at nighttime. The lights illuminate
the road well enough, but they make
you very visible from all sides. Likewise,
the flashing turn signals add to the
visibility factor and thus the safety. We
suspect that some Asian law requires
a beeper for the turn signals, and on a
bike this silent, the sharp beep ensures
that you won’t forget to turn the signals
off. The motorcycle-style mirrors require
a 14mm wrench to adjust, but they are
effective and nice to have in traffic. We
compared the driving range in the daytime with the headlights off to nighttime
with the lights burning, and there did
seem to be a difference in battery life.
WHAT ABOUT PEDALING?
You can help the Jetson away from
a stop and up hills by using the pedals to assist the motor. The pedaling
geometry is very compact, so pedaling
isn’t efficient unless you are very short.
If you are tall, it helps to slide onto the
back seat to pedal for efficient pedaling geometry; almost like a recumbent.
Trust us, you don’t want to pedal very
far without the battery. On a conventional bicycle, you rise up a little as you
pedal, and that aids comfort. Since you
won’t be pedaling much on the Jetson,
the wide and well-padded scooter-style
seat is appropriate and welcome. In
most areas, a bicycle can carry two
people, as long as they both have a seat
and a place to put their feet. The Jetson
has a seat for two, and one passenger
can use the pedals and the other the
floorboards. We were actually more surprised at how well you could pedal the
Jetson than we were how difficult it was.
SO, WHO IS THIS BIKE FOR?
The Jetson should make sense for
a wide range of people. Those cruising
for fun with friends, others looking for a
campground companion for the motor-home, or anyone cruising at the beach
or in urban settings. Likewise, it seems
a near-perfect short-distance commuter or college-campus vehicle. A small
split clip on the bodywork gives you a
place to hang a book bag, purse or even
some bags of groceries. The locking
fork and ignition key add a lot of peace
If you have small feet you can choose between the floor or pedals as foot rests.
The Jetson’s meter doesn’t have much info,
but iit tells you enough.
The brakes are more than powerful enough,
but the fork is a little underdamped.
