RPE has a variety of
existing battery cases
to work with for users
looking for a complete
pack. Or, the company
can re;ll your bike’s
production battery case
with fresh cells.
This is the most important part of the process.
Every cell gets a full charge/discharge and must
meet claimed output and match perfectly with the
cells it will be grouped with. That guarantees the
highest performance and best life expectancy for
every battery pack.
Completed packs are attached to these load-testing machines. They
simulate drawing the power down the way that the expected use would.
This allows RPE to test the completed pack and to ;nd the limits of a
BMS (battery management system) board. A properly functioning BMS
should prevent the machine from draining the battery all the way. RPE
can repair some BMS boards.
need the charger or bike. It can handle any existing e-bike
battery. And, in most cases, RPE can add higher amperage
than what the user started with. The only additional charge
is a flat $50 to build the new battery into an existing case.
RPE batteries range from $280 for a 24-volt, 8-amp-hour all
the way to $750 for a 48-volt, 16-amp-hour. With offerings at
8, 10, 15, 16 and 20 amp-hours, RPE can supply additional
backup batteries for any motor.
Once the customer has seen options for their battery case,
RPE is able to do the work on a one-week turnaround. RPE
is a certified Hazmat shipper, so there are no hiccups with
outgoing batteries sent back to customers. They will just be
responsible for the extra $28 fee on top of ground shipping
back to them.
Each pack is designed by battery engineer Sean Turner
and is assembled from cells that are individually tested to
ensure they have the voltage and capacity they are rated
at. This testing takes time, so at times the staff takes
turns coming in at midnight to exchange cells on the test
equipment to keep the line running to capacity, since every
cell is tested. According to RPE e-bike product manager/
designer Michael Trono, RPE has ample recharging capacity
so that they are able to rebuild more batteries than ever.
If a customer already has one of RPE’s batteries, then
