carry your groceries home from the market
and transport the kids home from school.
The bikes are often identified by their long
wheelbase and frame rails that extend
beyond the saddle. There are usually
accessories to make carrying a specific
type of payload possible—from rails and
seats for the kids and surfboards to large
bags or platforms for groceries and shopping bags.
Some carry most of the stuff on the
back, some have a platform on the front
as well, and some are like a tricycle with a
bucket up front to carry kids or stuff and
one drive wheel in the back. Steering these
takes some getting used to, but they can
carry almost what a small car can. And
with the electric motor, it’s often as fast
and much less expensive than taking your
Examples of cargo bikes include the

Power Bikes Radwagon, Walleräng M.01
and Xtracycle Edgerunner.
Commuter bikes are designed for getting to and from work or school. They’re
not made for comfort on long rides; they’re
for getting you from point A to point B as
quickly as possible without making you
sweat. The cool thing about these is that
you can ride to work and arrive fresh, then
after work you can leave the electric system turned off and get in a little sweat if
Most companies make commuter bikes.
Examples include the Easy Motion EVO
City, the A2B Entz, the e-Prodigy Logan,
the Elby and the Pedego Classic City
Here’s a tip: If you ride 10 miles to
work each way, don’t get a battery with a
20-mile range. Running the battery down
almost completely every day will cut the
battery’s life short. We’d suggest something in a higher range, perhaps 40-plus
miles, to put less stress on the battery and
extend its life.
Folding bikes are, well, bikes that fold.
There’s usually a locking hinge in the middle of the frame that allows you to fold the
bike in half, and usually on the incredibly
tall stem there’s a locking hinge as well.
They don’t fold up into a briefcase, like
George Jetson’s car, but they do fold up
small enough to easily fit a car’s back seat
or trunk for easy carrying, or behind your
desk in your cubicle at work.
Examples of folding bikes include the
A2B Kuo+, and models from Dahon, Blix,
Brompton and many others. There’s even
a folding fat bike (the Trail Viper) from SSR
Bulls’ Sturmvogel is
a great bike to cruise
around on, and it has
one of the longest-range
batteries on the market.
Commuter bikes, like the Easy Motion Evo City bike, are set up perfectly
to be comfortable to ride to work and have a rack to carry your briefcase,
lunch and whatever else you need to take with you.
The Blix Vika+ is a good example of a folding
bike. It can easily fold up to ;t in a car seat or
your trunk to go anywhere.
